SLOVENIAN THEATRE MUSEUM; The Slovenian Theatre Museum was founded under the aegis of the Slovenian National Theatre in Ljubljana in 1952, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Provincial Theatre in Ljubljana. The first director was Janko Traven, who collected an enormous amount of material from the early periods of Slovenian theatrical history. Prior to 1945, he brought together in the museum materials from theatre archives.

In 1978, the Theatre Museum merged with the Film Museum in Ljubljana. Hence the institution has since 1979 been called National Theatre and Film Museum. The film department has published numerous independent studies and series of papers from the domain of the history and theory of Slovenian film. The museum acquired its own display rooms, a hall for performances and offices for the first time in 1990.

In August 1996 the National Theatre and Film Museum was devided into two independent institutions: Slovenian National Theatre Museum and Slovenian Cinematheque
