Western and Arab nations are expected to demand that Syrian forces implement an immediate ceasefire, when they meet in Tunis on Friday.
The so-called "Friends of Syria" want international aid groups to have access to areas worst hit by the ongoing violence. Mohammad Farouk Taifour, Vice President of the Syrian National Council said: "We expect support for the Syrian people and the Syrian opposition." "Securing safe passage to rescue the people, to deliver humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians, with the means that are available," he added. Thousands of people have been killed in an almost year-long uprising against the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Meeting host Tunisia strongly opposes any form of foreign military intervention. "I insist on the political solution, since that's what we want. We have been working with other friends of the country to find a political solution," said Adnene Moncer, a spokesman for the Tunisian president. The United Nations and Arab League have appointed former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as their envoy to Syria. The world has so far proved powerless when it comes to alleviating the suffering of civilians.
