US Experimental Music Icon Performs in Maribor

US experimental artist Laurie Anderson will perform her latest solo story work "Dirtday!" in Maribor on Friday evening in what is expected to be one of the high points of the European Capital of Culture programme.

The influential New York-based electronic music producer and performer is one of the most versatile artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, known for her multimedia shows and inventive use of technology. "Dirtday!" is the third and last in her series of solo story works, which includes "Happiness" and "The End of the Moon" and is seen as the culmination of Anderson's ground breaking work in this genre. In this collection of songs and stories, Anderson looks at politics, theories of evolution, families, history, and animals. Set against a detailed and lush sonic landscape, the powerful and soulful collection of songs and stories create a unique picture, a hallucinatory world made of dreams and reality. It's a very long story with many chapters about evolution theories, about why we dream, as we don't really know much about that. There's also a little bit about politics and some media stuff, as well as stories about my dog, Anderson told a news conference ahead of the concert on Thursday. She compared her work to that of politicians, who she said were telling us stories about the past and what is going to happen in the future, while citizens and voters decide about which story they liked best. Stories rule the world as words can start wars and make people do incredible things, the artist said, adding that we live in a world of words.
