Unemployment Rate Hits 12-Year High

There were 811,568 persons in paid employment in January, down 5,700 from a month earlier.

Just under 116,000 persons were registered as unemployed, up 2.8% from December. The construction sector alone lost 1,400 jobs in a month. Payroll in the industry contracted by a third (over 30,000 jobs lost) since the slump began in 2008.

Manufacturing lost even more jobs (37,000) in the same period, but since the sector is much larger this translates into a sixth of its total payroll. The figures come a day after the Institute of Macroeconomic Analysis and Development (IMAD) projected that unemployment would peak at 12.9% this year.
