UK flies in unfrozen Libyan dinars

Britain's Royal Air Force has flown into Benghazi crates of freshly printed bank notes that had been blocked by UK authorities in March.

This is the first batch of notes worth about one billion euros due to arrive in Libya.

The head of Libya's new central bank, Qassem Azzoz, said: "It's very important for paying salaries, which is the most important thing. People in the liberated cities did not have salaries for over two months now, and we need some cash for fixing hospitals and some security places."

Muammer Gaddafi had ordered the bank notes from the British printing company De La Rue earlier this year.

Advance on Gaddafi's home city

Libyan rebels are massing on the road to Sirte, Muammar Gaddafi's home city and one of his last bastions of support.
