Witnesses said only one of them hit a blast wall and there was no damage or casualties.
The rockets were fired from a vehicle at the embassy in northern Baghdad, outside the heavily fortified Green Zone complex, according to a senior Iraqi security official. "There were two Katyusha rockets. The first one hit the embassy blast wall, and the second one hit the second floor of an adjacent bank," the official said. In Turkey the AK party's vice-president blamed Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki for caring more about making aggressive speeches about his country than protecting Turkey's embassy in his capital.
On Monday Iraq summoned the Turkish ambassador in Baghdad to complain about comments by Turkish officials it said amounted to meddling in its affairs. Iraqi officials did not specify what Turkish remarks they were angry about, but the complaint appeared to stem from comments earlier this month by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who said a Sunni-Shi'ite conflict in Iraq, if unleashed, could engulf the entire Islamic world.
On Wednesday the Turkish Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan said his country does not want a return to chaos in Iraq. "Turkey is not in the habit of interfering in the internal affairs of any country," Caglayan told a business forum in the Arbil, the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. "We hope the Iraqi people who have for years seriously suffered from war ... will not enter an atmosphere of chaos just as the (US) soldiers are leaving," he said in a speech. "God willing, the problems of Iraq will be overcome by Iraqis."
