Turkey: first funerals of mine tragedy victims take place

The first funerals of workers killed in Turkey's worst mining disaster have taken place. Large numbers of mourners attended services in the west of the country.

The tragedy has devastated entire families in this small mining community.

The number of confirmed dead has now climbed to 282 at the Soma mine.

Freezer trucks and a cold storage warehouse are serving as makeshift morgues, with hospital facilities overwhelmed.

In Soma, exhausted rescue workers search for the dead in smouldering tunnels filled with toxic gases.

Relatives wait for any news on their loved ones.

But hopes have now faded for around 120 workers still believed trapped deep underground.

As the desperate search and agonising wait continue, teams of psychiatrists have been called in to counsel victims families, plunged into the deepest distress.
