Syria rejects Arab League roadmap

Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo have agreed on a new political roadmap for Syria and called on support from the United Nations.

A series of reforms were spelled out including a demand that Syria's president delegate power. Damascus immediately rejected the plan. Saudi Arabia has also declared it is withdrawing from the Syrian monitoring mission.Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said his country was pulling out its observers, "because the Syrian government had failed to comply with previous Arab proposals that could stop the bloodshed of the Syrian people." The observers are there to verify President Bashar al-Assad's regime is stopping its crackdown on protesters calling for reform. Yesterday the Syrian Army claimed an attack on a mini bus in Homs left 11 people dead. The government continues to assert it is fighting terrorists and armed gangs. After the meeting in Cairo, Qatar which has taken a hardline against Syria said it was time to consider sending in Arab peacekeepers.
