Seven trucks carrying food and other relief supplies, joined by Red Crescent ambulances to evacuate the sick and wounded, have been stalled in the city since Friday.
"We are now negotiating with the Syrian authorities to see whether there is a possibility for us to enter the district together with our partners of the Syrian Red Crescent to enter the Baba Amro neigbourhood to be able to bring in humanitarian assistance to evacuate the wounded and the sick," said ICRC Deputy Spokesman Sebastien Carliez, speaking from Geneva. "The situation is worrying in the city of Homs, in the district of Baba Amro obviously, so we need to get in to see what the needs are and to be able to cater for the needs and to bring humanitarian assistance as soon as we can to the population there."
Two French journalists smuggled out of Homs arrived back on home soil on Friday, one of whom suffered a serious leg injury in the bombardment of the city. President Nicolas Sarkozy said Syrian authorities would be called to account for what he called "their crimes."
