Stormy weather disrupts Christmas getaway for thousands

Much of Western Europe faces a stormy Christmas with high winds, heavy rain and flooding.

In the UK, two people have been killed after falling into swollen rivers in Cumbria in northwest England and, in a separate incident, in north Wales.

The bad weather has disrupted the holiday plans for thousands with cancellations on many rail services.

One train passenger trying to get home said she had no choice: "I have got to get there.

The rest of my family is already up there waiting for me," she said.

In France, one person has died and another is missing off the northeast coast.

Gale force winds have brought down power lines, leaving 90,000 households without electricity while fallen trees have caused major problems for road users.

Italy and Spain are also bracing themselves as the storms move in their direction.
