Speaker Hosts Meeting on Holding Supervisors

Virant called the meeting after he issued a public call last Friday for the proponents to join forces to surpass partisanship in deciding on who should oversee the new holding managing state assets.

He said that the position of supervising the new super-fund with around EUR 10bn in assets was so important that it could not be subject to partisan bickering.

But his proposal was rejected by the biggest ruling coalition party, the Democrats (SDS), who say he has no power to interfere in the appointment procedures as all proponents are independent.

The supervisory board of the holding will be made up of nine members appointed by the National Assembly upon proposals from the government (three), Economic and Social Council (one), deputy groups (four) and the opposition-controlled parliamentary Commission for Oversight of Public Finances (one).

Fearing that the proposed make-up does not ensure balance that would provide for proper oversight, the opposition Positive Slovenia (PS) filed amendments to the holding act this week that would give the opposition a bigger role in appointing the supervisors.

Meanwhile, the parliamentary Credentials and Privileges Commission is scheduled to hold a session today to determine the procedure for candidates to apply for the supervisor posts.
