Slovenia Fielding 83 Athletes at Inaugural European Games


Slovenia will field a total of 83 athletes in 20 sports at the 2015 European Games, the inaugural edition of the international multi-sport event for athletes representing the national Olympic Committees of Europe, to be held in Azerbaijan's Baku for two weeks starting on Saturday.


The Slovenian delegation was cautious in making any predictions for the European Games, as it is the first competition of this kind with new qualification criteria, but expectations are high.

 

"We have a very strong team in judo. The taekwondo team is also complete. Shooters will compete with the strongest possible team. Gymnast Sašo Bertoncelj also has a chance for a good result," Blaž Perko of the Slovenian Olympic Committee said ahead of the event.

 

Slovenian athletes at the European Games will be competing in badminton, boxing, gymnastics, judo, kayak/canoe, karate, road cycling, mountain biking, 3X3 street basketball, archery, table tennis, swimming, wrestling, sambo, shooting, taekwondo and triathlon.

The opening ceremony will be held on Friday evening at the Baku National Stadium, while the competitions will start on Saturday. The games will feature more than 6,000 athletes from 50 European countries.

 

The European Games are the final continental Games to be initiated after the Asian Games, Pan-American Games, All-Africa Games and Pacific Games. As of 2015, every continent will have a continental games organised in the Olympic spirit.
