Romney pledges 12 million new jobs as he accepts US presidential

US presidential candidate Mitt Romney has formally accepted the Republican party's nomination to challenge Barack Obama for the White House.

To rapturous applause, the 65-year-old Mormon pledged to the party's National Convention in Tampa, Florida that he would turnaround America's economy and create 12 million jobs.

Romney also told supporters that under his leadership, America would be energy independent by 2020. He promised to cut the deficit and put the US back on track to a balanced budget.

"Today, the time has come to turn the page. Today, the time has come for us to put the disappointments of the last four years behind us, to put aside the divisiveness and recriminations, to forget about what might have been and to look ahead at what can be," said Romney.

A large part of Romney's speech was aimed directly at those disillusioned with current president Barack Obama. His speech was watched on primetime TV by millions of undecided voters.

"This Obama economy has crushed the middle class. Family income has fallen by $4000. But health insurance premiums are higher, food prices are higher, utility bills are higher and gasoline prices, they've doubled.

"Today more Americans wake up in poverty than ever before. Nearly one out of six Americans is living in poverty.

Look around you, these aren't strangers, these are our brothers and sisters, our fellow Americans. His policies have not helped create jobs, they've depressed them," said Romney.

The 57th presidential election takes place on November 6.

Stefan Grobe, our correspondent in Florida says: "For many Republicans, Mitt Romney is the ‘Great White Hope'.

"But that may not be enough. Polls suggest that he's likely to win support from less than a third of the Hispanic and virtually none of the African American communities. Romney will now need to make serious inroads with these minorities and that will be an uphill battle."
