Despite the unseasonably rainy August, Slovenia's capital attracted a record number of overnight stays. These were up almost 11% year-on-year in August. The season is also looking good on the coast.
Overnight stays in Ljubljana were up 10.7% year-on-year to 95,783 in August, totalling 674,302 in the first eight months, 5% more than in the same period last year, data from the local tourist board shows.
Ljubljana hosted a great number of outdoor and indoor events this summer, including the celebration of the 2000th anniversary of Emona, the city's Ancient Roman precursor.
Until October typical local dishes are available every Friday from stalls in the square by the central produce market as part of the Open Kitchen project.
Apart from local delicacies, wines from Slovenian winegrowing regions will be available for tasting and buying at outdoor events on 20 September and 8 and 15 November.
Despite the unsettled weather, the summer season is also assessed as broadly successful by the Tourism Association of Portorož, Slovenia's leading coastal resort.
Hotels in the municipality of Piran, which also includes Portorož, registered 184,000 overnights in August, up 1% compared to the same month a year ago; 80% were generated by foreign visitors.
The summer season is on a par with last year's with 475,124 overnight stays recorded from the beginning of June to the end of August.
A quarter of the overnights were generated by visitors from Slovenia, while most other tourists came from Italy, Austria, Germany ad Russia.
Piran and Portorž hotels recorded 791,622 overnight stays in the first eight months of the year, 2% fewer than in the same period last year. About 70% were generated by foreign guests.
