Prime Minister Congratulates Merkel on Election Win

Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek congratulated on Monday German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her party, the Christian Democratic Union, winning Sunday's parliamentary election in Germany. Congratulations also came from the opposition Democratic Party (SDS) and New Slovenia (NSi).

Congratulating Merkel on the "convincing success", Bratušek said in a press release she was looking forward to continue the "good and positive cooperation with the chancellor" in future talks and agreements on a more competitive and successful Europe.

According to the prime minister, Merkel's win is certainly a result of the fact that under her guidance Germany made key steps in dealing with the economic crisis in the eurozone and the EU.

Bratušek hopes that the new German government will be established as soon as possible, "as there is still a lot of work to be done before the crisis is completely bridged".

Merkel also received congratulations personally from SDS president Janez Janša, according to the party's official Twitter account.

The NSi, another member of the European People's Party (EPP), said on Twitter that "Christian democracy is the clear direction for the future of the EU and Slovenia as well".

The head of the coalition Social Democrats (SD), Igor Lukšič, meanwhile said he was disappointed with the strong support for Merkel, as he believes that the chancellor did not deserve it.

The progress of Social Democrats, although being modest, is a small step towards a more socially-oriented state and narrowing of social differences both in Germany and in the EU, he added.
