President to Nominate Cerar PM-Designate Today

President Borut Pahor will nominate on Tuesday Miro Cerar, the head of the SMC party that won in the 13 July general election, for prime minister-designate. A vote in the National Assembly is expected for next Tuesday and Cerar needs absolute majority, meaning at least 46 votes, to be appointed PM-designate.

Before nominating him, Pahor will meet with Cerar and the pair is scheduled to give a statement after the nomination is signed.

Cerar is expected to be confirmed as prime minister-designate as he can count on the support of the three parties that remain in coalition-building talks, the Pensioners' Party (DeSUS), Social Democrats (SD) and the Alenka Bratušek Alliance (ZaAB) alongside the 36 SMC MPs.

If all MPs from the four parties back the nomination, Cerar will enjoy the support of 56 MPs in Slovenia's 90-member legislature.

The date for the extraordinary session is yet to be set. However, new Parliament Speaker and SMC vice-president Milan Brglez has said he was leaning toward 26 August, which is also the last possible day according to terms stipulated by the law.

More than a month after the election it is however still unclear which parties will be a part of the coalition.

But by the end of this week the shape of the coalition will expectedly become much clearer, as the SMC will decide who to invite into the partnership in the coming days, according to Cerar.
