Postojna Caves Attract Visitors from East Asia

The magnificently decorated karst caves attracted 520,000 visitors last year, which is on a par with the 2011 figure despite 30,000 fewer visitors from Italy and Slovenia.

"We are looking back at an exceptional year, also because the fewer visitors from the nearby countries due to the economic crisis were replaced by visitors from East Asia and the countries that have not been affected by the crisis so much," the boss of the company operating the caves, Marjan Batagelj, says.

The company adapted to the changing trends with audio guides in the languages of new visitors, including Mandarin Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese. "They are very pleased because it shows that we recognise their culture and their language," Batagelj has told the STA.

The company has opened a new self-service restaurant on the ground floor of Hotel Jama and an exhibition pavilion, where a museum collection will be set up.

This year, a project to renovate the whole lighting system in the caves will be launched. The project, which is slated for completion in 2014, will be subsidised by cohesion funds amounting to EUR 3.5m.

The company will also go "pet friendly" this year: as dogs are not allowed in the caves, they will be looked after during the time their owners spend sightseeing.
