Poll: Govt Support at 20%

74.5% of the respondents taking part in the poll carried out by Ninamedia pollster said the government was doing poorly. Those supporting the government come mostly from the ranks of the ruling Democrats (SDS) (83%) and the junior coalition New Slovenia (NSi) (55%).

The party rankings suggest a general decrease in support for political parties. The SD enjoys the support of 17.8% of the respondents, down more than three percentage points from last month. The ruling SDS enjoys the support of 13.3%, down a percentage point from November. In third place is opposition New Slovenia with 8.5%, down from 14% in November. The only party to have gained in popularity and climbed over the National Assembly threshold is the People's Party (SLS). Their support has increased to 5.6% from 2.6% the month before. Other parties remain below the 4% threshold.

Exploring the people's position on Slovenia's current social and political situation, the survey showed that 28.6% of the respondents believe a no-confidence vote and a technical government would be the best solution. 27.5% of the respondents said the best would be to call an early election after a political party is formed representing the interest of the protesters. 8.4% of those questioned believe an early election was the best solution, while 26.6% believe no changes are needed and Slovenia does not need an early election. A great majority of the respondents (75.3%) said they supported the protests against political elites. 18.5% said they do not support the protesters, while 4.3% said they did not care. The survey also examined the popularity of Slovenia's former prime ministers: Janez Drnovšek leads with 60%, Janša and Pahor follow with 8% each, followed by Lojze Peterle with 6%, Andrej Bajuk with 3% and Tone Rop with 2%. The poll was conducted between 18 and 20 December on a sample of 700 respondents. It was commissioned by the daily Dnevnik and commercial broadcaster POP TV.
