PM to Meet President&Coalition on Future of Govt

PM Alenka Bratušek is expected to meet President Borut Pahor and coalition partners on Tuesday to discuss the future of the government following her loss in the leadership battle in the ruling Positive Slovenia (PS).

While Bratušek said she would resign if defeated by Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Janković for the PS leadership, she has taken several days to reflect since Friday. It is expected that she will present her decision on how to proceed today.

While early elections appear almost certain, the question is when they would be held, with the most likely scenario being in the autumn, with which the government would take care of some of the more pressing issues with full powers.

Some media in Slovenia have speculated that Bratušek would therefore propose to resign on 1 September or request a confidence vote.

The delayed resignation could get support of PS's three coalition partners, which said that they would leave the coalition after Janković won the leadership battle.

Janković's win has not only rattled the coalition but also caused a rift in the PS, which appears to be split, with a majority of MPs said to be behind Bratušek.

Some of these have already announced they are leaving the party, while it is possible that others will do so today.
