PM Janša to Meet Barroso ahead of EU Summit

Prime Minister Janez Janša will meet European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Brussels on Wednesday ahead of the two-day EU summit that is to commence on Thursday.

Among the topics discussed at the meeting will be the solving of the problems of the banking system, which Janša believes is of strategical importance for Slovenia. The prime minister said on Tuesday that the rescue of Slovenian banks depended on whether or not MPs would back the inclusion of the golden fiscal rule in the Constitution.

The vote at the National Assembly will be held this summer although the government has so far failed to secure the necessary two-thirds majority for the motion. If Slovenia fails to solve its problems on its own, it will be forced to ask for aid, Janša warned. The inclusion of the fiscal rule in the Constitution or a similarly binding piece of legislation is envisaged by the European Fiscal Compact, which Slovenia has ratified. Janša and Barroso also expected to discuss Slovenia's implementation of fiscal goals in 2013 and the reforms of the pension system and the labour market. The Slovenian PM will on Thursday take part in the summit of the European People's Party, of which his Democrats (SDS) are members, and attend the eurozone summit on Friday.
