PM Bratušek in Paris for Youth Employment Conference

Slovenian Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek is due in Paris on Tuesday for a high-profile EU conference discussing ways to boost employment of young people through EU and national measures in education, training, labour market and incentives in support of small and medium-sized businesses.

Bratušek will attend the conference at the invitation of French President Francois Hollande, along with a number of other heads of government or state and labour ministers from EU countries, as well as officials from key European institutions and associations in the field.

The proceedings will start with a meeting of labour ministers from EU countries, among them Slovenia's Anja Kopač Mrak. The conference will then examine the tools that member countries use in returning the young who are not in education, training or in a job to the labour market or further training.

Slovenia's delegation will focus on the Guarantee for Young scheme that aims to bring together inter-ministerial measures affecting youth employment, including systemic measures to link the education system and the economy, to establish a system of high-quality internships and reform student work.

The approach has been welcomed by the Slovenian Youth Council, whose representatives will also take part in the conference as well as in the accompanying Youth Summit, which is being held in Paris between 11 and 13 November as a forum for young people to voice their opinion about youth employment.

The conference follows a similar event hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on 3 July and is part of the efforts at the top EU level aimed to tackle the burning issue of youth unemployment, including a decision to secure EUR 6bn for the purpose. Eurostat data show 5.5 billion of those aged up to 25 years were unemployed in the EU in July.
