Parliament Confirmed New Infrastructure Minister

Upon his appointment, Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek said the Ministry for Infrastructure and Spatial Planning was one of the most important ministries as infrastructural projects are what can help spur economic growth and create new jobs.

Omerzel is a successful entrepreneur and an internationally-recognised innovator, which makes him right for the post of infrastructure minister, Bratušek said.

Not all parties presented their view on Omerzel today. Open support was expressed by the PS, while the Democrats (SDS) and People's Party (SLS) voted against, saying they had expected him to present more concrete solutions.

Omerzel received the backing of the parliamentary Environment and Spatial Planning Committee earlier today. In his presentation to the committee, he said his work would focus on investments monitoring and issues surrounding spatial planning.

Omerzel also highlighted the need for strategic ties between the Luka Koper port and rail operator Slovenske železnice as well as a nationwide strategy on energy.

Born in 1974, Omerzel is an innovator with a degree in robotics. He owns a company, Lastinski, based in the city of Novo mesto (SE) which develops vending machine-integrated payphone services.

Omerzel also worked as project and product manager at Ultra, a company formerly co-owned by Gregor Golobič, the former head of the party Zares, a junior partner in the 2008-2011 coalition government. Omrzel was briefly a member of Golobič's party but he denies having any ties with the former science and technology minister.
