The opposition Democrats (SDS) are mulling an interpellation motion against Finance Minister Uroš Čufer, the first attempt to oust a minister in the Alenka Bratušek government. He is being targeted due to the dismissal of a senior SDS member from the board of the bad bank.
The government has dismissed Andrej Šircelj as non-executive director of the Bank Assets Management Company (BAMC) in what was a widely expected move considering his refusal to either give up his MP status or withdraw from the bad bank.
Both Šircelj and his party labelled the move as "unlawful", with the SDS saying that the deputy group would decide this week whether to file a motion to oust Minister Čufer.
The dismissal is a "clear abuse of institutions of the state for political purposes," the party said. Minister Čufer said that the government had obtained three legal opinions, which "need to be respected".
The interpellation motion could have serious implications, coming just as the government is putting the finishing touches on the 2014 budget and conducting key steps in the restructuring of the bank system.
Minister Čufer has already been weakened in government by the insistence of the Pensioners Party (DeSUS) that measures affecting pensioners are out of the question, and by the refusal of the Citizens' List (DL) to accept new taxes.
