A second Dallas nurse infected with the Ebola virus has been transferred to the hospital in Atlanta which oversaw the recovery of two US aid workers.
Like her infected colleague she had treated Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan and was being monitored when she took a return flight from Dallas to Ohio despite registering a slightly raised temperature.
President Barack Obama immediately changed his schedule in a sign of growing concern.
"We're going to make sure that something like this is not repeated and that we are monitoring, supervising, overseeing in a much more aggressive way exactly what's taking place in Dallas initially and making sure that the lessons learned are then transmitted to hospitals and clinics all across the country," said the president during a meeting with his advisors in the White House.
As the Ebola outbreak continues to rage in Liberia Sierra Leone and Guinea,
health ministers in Europe are to discuss whether to begin continent-wide screening of people travelling from those Ebola hit countries.
Meanwhile, the UN's Ebola mission chief has said the world is falling behind in the race to contain the virus, which has killed more than 4,000 in West Africa.
