Obama offers comfort to cinema-shooting victims

As the people of Aurora, Colorado tried to come to terms with Friday's cinema shooting, President Barack Obama flew in to offer his own words of comfort.

Twelve people died and another 58 were wounded after a lone gunman opened fire during a screening of the new Batman film.

Among the 12 victims was a six-year-old girl.

After his private meeting with the families Obama said he had met them as a father and a husband.

"I confessed to them that words are always inadequate in this kinds of situation, but that my main task was to serve as a representative of the entire country and let them know that we are thinking about them at this moment and we will continue to think about them each and every day."

The gunman, who has been identified by police as James Eagan Holmes, is said not be be cooperating with the investigation into the killings.

Later today he is due to make his first court appearance. So far no motive has been established but it's reported that police now have his computer which may shed some light.

For now Holmes is being held in solitary confinement for his own protection while his actions have prompted a heated gun control debate in the US.
