Obama and Romney level pegging in crucial week for Democrats

With the Democrat party faithful headed for Charlotte, North Carolina for their convention, Obama is hoping for a bounce in opinion polls.

The November 6 election is one of the tightest yet: Speaking to university students, President Obama reacted to their booing when he mentioned the Republicans: "Now last week the other party gave their pitch at their convention down in Florida....Don't boo, vote!" A week ago Obama led Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney 46 per cent to 42. But their convention gave his rival a boost and they are now neck and neck on 45 percentage points each. The Republicans used their gathering in Florida to play up Romney's family and personal life to try to win over the female vote. Pollsters say many are waiting to hear what Obama has to say on the priority issue of the campaign - the economy and unemployment.
