NW Slovenia Braces for Heavy Snowfall

After an unseasonably warm first half the winter, Slovenia can expect snow to cower the entire country on Thursday, as up to 50 centimetres of snow may fall by Friday morning in the north-west of the country and up to a meter in the mountains.

Andrej Velkavrh of the Environment Agency told the STA that it would start snowing in the south-west in the early hours on Thursday, spreading towards the central and north-eastern Slovenian by the afternoon.

The north-east and south of the country can expect merely some 5cm of snow, while 10-15cm will fall in the Koroško region and central Slovenia.

Much more snow will have fallen in the north-west, where 50cm can be expected in the valleys and up to 1m in the mountains.

While it will only rain at the coast, snow will turn into rain also elsewhere by Friday, the only exception being the north-west.

Rain may cause black ice to build, making roads unsafe, Velkavrh cautioned.

The forecast is however good news for ski resorts and the organisers of the Golden Fox Women's Ski World Cup races scheduled for Saturday and Sunday which have been moved from Maribor (NE) to Kranjska Gora (NW) due to lack of snow.

Saturday will again bring some snow, but it should stop snowing on Sunday. Velkavrh added that sun may break through the clouds on Monday.
