North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-il dies

He's believed to have suffered a heart attack on Saturday while travelling on a train. An emotional announcer told the nation the news saying his death was due to fatigue.

Immediately all other broadcasting was cancelled and replaced by classical music. The funeral is due to be held in Pyongyang on December 28. Kim's death is likely to cause huge shock waves across the region, sparking concern over who is in control of the reclusive state and its nuclear programme.

In South Korea the military has been put on alert while Asian stock markets fell.
