New Sports Centre Opening at Rogla

A new Alpine and cross-country skiing centre will open at Rogla (NE) on Saturday. The EUR 12m investment also includes a four-star hotel, which is to provide board as of 26 June to athletic teams training at Rogla.

The facility was built in a public-private partnership between tools maker Unior and the Zreče municipality. It was also co-funded with EU funds.

Unior management member Branko Bračko told the press ahead of the opening that the municipality contributed land and infrastructure worth EUR 2m. The investment received EUR 3.3m in EU funds, while Unior contributed a total of around EUR 6.5m.

Barbara Soršak, the boss of Unior's tourism branch Unior turizem, which also operates the Rogla ski slopes, has told the press that the hotel will initially operate with only 30 beds, but capacities can be increased without any problems if necessary.

Soršak said that the hotel has already been booked for autumn, mostly by international athletic teams. At first the hotel will employ six people.

Initially, the plan was to build a cross-country skiing centre for the 2013 Winter Universiade, which was to be hosted by Maribor but was later cancelled due to funding issues.

Unior, which is in the process of privatisation, is also undergoing a restructuring and is selling its tourism branch.

CEO Darko Hrastnik believes the Rogla facilities could be sold by mid-2015, while RTC Krvavec, another ski slopes operator, could be sold already this year.

Hrastnik said that the tools maker increased its revenue in the first quarter on a yearly level by 1% and posted EUR 2.6m in net profit, which was 30% more than in the same period a year ago.
