The new EU commission began work on Monday after taking office on Saturday. Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has made it clear that he believes the team is the last chance for Europe and has promised a new start for the EU.
Many Brussels watchers believe the team must hit the ground running. Zoltán Gyévai, journalist at bruxinfo.hu said: "The Juncker commission won't have time to warm up. They need to start by striking the big issues. First, the 300 million euro investment plan, which Juncker promises to compile before December's EU summit. Secondly, the pending budgetary issues are very important, for example the debate about the British contribution. "
Euronews Brussels correspondent Sándor Zsiros said: "The commission is already in office, but the college of the commissioners will meet only on Wednesday, and only then will it be clear what are the exact issues they are working on."
Juncker's first week could be marked by his trip to Frankfurt, where he will launch a new book by former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. He will also participate in a debate in Brussels with former EC president Jacques Delors.
