Mubarak to attend his trial today in Cairo

Forced out of office by his people, today he will be held to account. And Egypt's deposed president Hosni Mubarak will be present in person as his trial gets underway.

There was speculation the 83-year-old would be deemed too ill to take his place in the cage for defendants at Cairo's Police Accademy. But earlier he was taken from hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh where he has been treated for heart problems to attend court.

The fate of the man who ruled Egypt for almost 30 years has split the country.

"The people are divided," said engineer Ali Abdel Sater Ali. "Some are for the trial, I can't give you a percentage, but others are against it."

Accused of corruption and over the killing of protesters during the uprising that ended his regime, Mubarak will be tried alongside his two sons and the country's former interior minister. Mubarak faces a death sentence if convicted.
