Merkel: Europe without the Euro is unimaginable

Angela Merkel welcomed Dmitry Medvedev to Hannover at a time when Germany is looking for new energy sources to replace nuclear power.

But Chancellor Merkel played down expectations for a spectacular result on the Greek crisis at the upcoming EU summit.

"I think we are facing a historic task," she said. "We are facing the historic task of saving the Euro. The Euro is good for us all, the Euro is part of the economic success of Germany. Europe without the Euro is unimaginable and so it is worth taking any responsible effort to solve problems at the root."

President Medvedjev spoke about the Libyan conflict, saying a compromise between the rebels and the Gaddafi regime was possible. But in another swipe at countries who have formally recognised the rebels, he said supporting one side would be "exceptionally bad" for Libya.
