Maze Defending Gold at World Ski Championships

Slovenian skiing star Tina Maze will be defending her gold medal in the women's super-G from two years ago as the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2015 start in US ski resorts of Vail and Beaver Creek on Tuesday.

Maze will headline a total of eleven Slovenian skiers at the championships, with Klemen Kosi being Slovenia's biggest hope among male competitors.

The 31-year-old double champion from the 2014 Sochi Olympics will be a favourite in all five disciplines.

She will be in action already today in the super-G, where she will be defending her gold medal from Schladming in 2013.

Slovenia's greatest skier of all time will also be defending silver medals in the super combined and giant slalom.

Maze is currently the overall leader in the Alpine Ski World Cup with 985 points, having already surpassed her total from the previous season (964), when she finished fourth overall.

Running until 15 February, these are the third world championships for Vail/Beaver Creek, which previously hosted the event in 1989 and 1999.

Slovenians won three medals in 1989 there when still competing for the former Yugoslavia. Tomaž Čižman won bronze in the men's super-G, while Mateja Svet won bronze in the women's giant slalom and gold in slalom.
