Maltese President Starting Official Visit

25. 02. 2015

President Borut Pahor will host on Wednesday and Thursday Maltese President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca. The official visit, during which Coleiro Preca will meet senior state officials, is an opportunity to confirm the good bilateral ties, Pahor's Office has said.

The visit is also seen as an opportunity to re-establish a dialogue at the highest level between the countries, Pahor's office said. During her time in Slovenia, Coleiro Preca will also meet PM Miro Cerar and Speaker Milan Brglez.

The talks will revolve around topical EU issues, including migration, terrorism and social issues, according to the press release.

Pahor will welcome his counterpart with military honours at the Congress Square and after a set of meetings between the presidents and their delegations the pair will hold a joint press conference.

After meeting top state officials on Wednesday, Coleiro Preca will visit the Postojna cave, one of Slovenia's top tourist destinations, on Thursday.

She will also meet Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Janković, visit a centre for people with intellectual disabilities and meet representatives of several NGOs.

Meetings among senior officials from Slovenia and Malta have been few and far between. The last Maltese representative to visit Slovenia was its former parliament speaker Louis Galea in 2009, while Janez Janša visited Malta in his capacity as PM in 2008.

Business ties are also limited, with Slovenian exports to Malta totalling EUR 9.6m in the first 11 months of 2014, while imports from Malta stood at EUR 4.6m in the same period.
