A massive police operation targeting corruption in public healthcare is under way across Slovenia. The police said that dozens of house searches are being conducted, with as many as 13 suspects detained for questioning.
The house searches are being conducted by 116 investigators at 58 locations in virtually all parts of Slovenia, with the aim being to secure proof of suspected white collar crime in health.
"The investigators...are focusing on proving a series of criminal acts related to bribery and accepting bribers, which carry maximum prison terms of three and five years," police spokesperson Drago Menegalija told the media.
The police said the operation was brought about by the establishment of a new taskforce aimed at dealing with systemic corruption, which set its sights on the public healthcare sector in September.
Investigators have visited both of Slovenia's biggest hospitals, UKC Ljubljana and UKC Maribor, as part of the operation.
UKC Ljubljana said three staff were being investigated, although the institution as a whole was not a target.
