A zero-emission tourist train, named Urban, is set to tour the streets of this year's European Green Capital as of mid-April. Urban, which will be free of charge in the first days after its launch, will connect Ljubljana's main tourist attractions throughout the year.
The state-of-the-art tourist train "is the brainchild of the LPP transport company and Slovenian e-mobility experts", the Ljubljana City Municipality said in a press release.
Urban is composed of three passenger cars and one locomotive. Equipped with 12 solar panels providing the train with energy, it will reach a maximum speed of 25 kilometres per hour.
The train's route is planned to start at City Hall, taking its passengers on a path through the Ljubljana Castle, the Špica town beach, the Trnovo borough, the French Revolution Square, Congress Square, and Prešeren Square to end at its starting point.
As Mayor Zoran Janković said at Tuesday's press conference, the route will be set after some test rides by LPP director Peter Horvat, who will make sure Urban does not cause traffic jams during rush hours.
The train will embark on its route every full hour throughout the year, with 47 seats for passengers, one seat for the tour guide, and one wheelchair space.
Passengers will be able to pay for the ride with cash, credit card, the Urbana city card or their phone. Urban is set to start its regular route at the end of April.
