Ljubljana Among Finalists for EMW Award

The Slovenian capital is one of the three cities shortlisted for the European Mobility Week Award by an independent panel of transport experts examining efforts to boost sustainable mobility during mobility week. The winner of the EU-sponsored award will be announced 24 March.

Ljubljana was one of 32 Slovenian municipalities to participate in the European Mobility Week 2013.

The main objective was to encourage people to change their commuting habits and raise awareness about the effects of traffic on air pollution in the local environment.

Numerous events and activities, such as the marking of new bicycle lanes and promotion of public transport services, took place in the week between 16 an 22 September.

In a major change undertaken as part of efforts to promote sustainable mobility in Ljubljana, the main thoroughfare through the centre of the city, Slovenska cesta, was closed for motor vehicles with the exception of public transport.

Along with Ljubljana, Budapest (Hungary) and Östersund (Sweden) are the other cities shortlisted for the EMW Award 2013.

The winner will be announced by European commissioners Siim Kallas and Janez Potočnik in Brussels on 24 March.
