Kranjska Gora Will Host Golden Fox Races

The 50th Golden Fox women's alpine skiing meet will be held in Kranjska Gora (NW) this year, as the International Skiing Association (FIS) agreed with the proposal of the organisers to move the event from Maribor (NE) due to lack of snow.

The dates of the two Alpine Skiing Cup events remain unchanged - on 1 and 2 February.

The slalom and giant slalom races in Kranjska Gora will be the last two ladies' events before the Sochi Olympics, opening on 7 February.

FIS approved the move after controller Filip Gartner inspected the Vitranc slope, which will host the races.

Gartner believes the quality of the snow is good and that the weather forecast is favourable as well.

Slovenia has seen virtually no snow this winter and an unseasonably warm spell with temperatures of up to 10 degrees centigrade has persisted for over a month.

The meteorologists expect snowfall tomorrow and up to 30 cm of snow are to fall in some parts of the country.

This will be the sixth time the Golden Fox will be held in Kranjska Gora.

The most common reason for the change in location was lack of snow, as Maribor lies only 275 metres above sea level (Kranjska Gora is at 806 metres).

Chief organiser Srečko Vilar said the "condition of snow was such that it allowed for the races.

And considering the weather forecast the slope will continue to be improved.

We plan to make additional snow...and will be able to prepare good races".

Slovenia's greatest hope is skier Tina Maze, who won the Alpine Ski Cup in the previous season.

Although she has started this season slightly less successfully, she hopes that a recent change of her coach will improve her odds.
