Janša Calls for Stepping Up of Non-Military Action against Syria

The international community will have to step up its sanctions against Syria in the coming weeks, but a military action is not "an option at the moment", Prime Minister Janez Janša stressed as EU leaders discussed the situation in the country at the EU summit on Friday.

Imposing stricter sanctions against Syria is "necessary as civilians die daily and the end of conflict is nowhere to be seen", noted Janša amidst calls by EU leaders for introducing sanctions envisaged by the Chapter 7 of the UN Charter. Chapter 7 allows the UN Security Council to "determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression" and to take military and non-military action to "restore international peace and security". The Slovenian prime minister said that while a military action was not an option at the moment, the efforts were aimed at unifying the international community and adopting a more decisive resolution at the UN level. He believes that many believe such a resolution would bring an end to the conflict without the use of force from the outside. So far most countries have been opposing military action, because they fear the conflict might spread throughout the region, while permanent members of the Security Council Russia and China impeded a more decisive action against Syria.
