IAEA holds talks with Iran over nuclear programme

The International Atomic Energy Agency is in Iran for discussions on the country's controversial nuclear programme.

The five member team of UN inspectors, from what is known as the IAEA, are in Tehran in the wake of Sunday's announcement that Iran will stop exporting oil to Britain and France. Tensions continue to grow between Tehran and the West, with the EU's tightened sanctions against Iran due to begin on July 1. Head of the IAEA team going to Tehran is IAEA Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts who said: "The highest priority remains, of course, the possible military dimensions of Iran's nuclear programme. But we want to tackle all outstanding issues and this is, of course, a very complex issue that may take a while, but we hope it will be constructive." Iran's refusal to curb uranium enrichment is the crux of the dispute and western powers have not ruled out using force. However, uranium enrichment has civilian as well as military uses, and Tehran says its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful.
