President Borut Pahor is expected to highlight human rights in his address to the UN General Assembly on Thursday as Slovenia bids for membership of the UN Human Rights Council in 2016-2018.
Preventive diplomacy, human security, protection of children in armed conflicts, respect for international law, mediation and dialogue among civilisations will rank high in Pahor's speech.
He is also expected to touch on the Syrian crisis and the Middle East.
"I believe the president will in particular highlight the fields Slovenia is best known for such as human rights, responsibility to protect, peaceful solving of disputes, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, climate and other environmental issues," Slovenia's Ambassador to the UN Andrej Logar has said.
In a recent interview with the STA, Logar was upbeat about Slovenia's bid for membership of the Human Rights Council in 2016-2018, noting that in its 2007-2010 term as a member, when he headed the Slovenian delegation, Slovenia earned reputation for her principled views.
In his address to the General Assembly last year, the then Prime Minister Janez Janša presented an initiative for an upgrade of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which Logar said remained Slovenia's priority.
