Hoping for a UN Security Council Seat

Voting will resume at the United Nations General Assembly today to determine whether Slovenia or Azerbaijan will represent the Eastern European group as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council in 2012-2013.

Nine rounds of voting on Friday were not enough to determine the winner, which has to garner a two-thirds majority of the votes in the General Assembly (129).

In the ninth take of the second round of voting Azerbaijan received 113 votes while Slovenia got 77. The country that falls behind strongly and has little chance of being elected usually withdraws. But the Slovenian delegation said they would not withdraw the bid no matter what because of the "smear campaign by Azerbaijan".

Foreign Minister Samuel Zbogar told the STA that Azerbaijan representatives had been pointing out that the government in Slovenia had fallen and speculating that the new government would lead a different foreign policy.
