Heavy fighting breaks out in Syrian capital

According to witnesses the sound of heavy machinegun fire could be heard from the western neighbourhood of al-Mezze.

The area is one of the most heavily guarded in the capital and is home to several security installations. The clashes come after an explosion earlier on Sunday in Syria's second city of Aleppo. A car bomb ripped through a residential area killing two people and wounding 30.

A weekend of violence also saw twin blasts which killed 27 people in the capital injuring nearly 100 others. It is now one year on since the first mass demonstration in Syria marked the start of the uprising against President Assad's rule. Twelve months later in neighbouring Turkey, Syrian protesters held their own demonstration calling for the president to step down.
