Greek unemployment climbs

The latest official figures for the third quarter of the year show the jobless rate rose to 24.8 percent of the workforce. It was the highest quarterly unemployment rate since this data series started in 1998.

For comparison, it was 23.6 percent in the previous three month period and just 17.7 percent in the third quarter last year.

For young people the total was 56.6 percent and nearly two thirds of all unemployed have been looking for work for more than a year.

Greece has already published monthly unemployment figures up to September. In September the rate rose to 26 percent.

The quarterly data are based on a bigger survey sample and provide detailed figures for each sector of the economy.
