Govt to Define Transitional Period for Croatian Workers

The temporary measure would be put in force for the period from 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2015, according to the draft bill, which is to be rushed through parliament.

Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec has recently urged caution in the issue saying the government ought to be careful not to do more harm than good.

The UK, France and Belgium are also considering imposing a transitional period on Croatian workers, while Germany, Netherlands and Austria have already announced they would put it in place.

When Slovenia joined the EU on 1 May 2004, 12 EU members decided to limit access to their labour markets for what they considered cheap labour force from the newcomers, including Slovenia.

While five countries had given up the restrictions gradually, Germany and Austria lifted them only at the end of the seven-year transitional period.
