Gaddafi still elusive as rebels tighten grip on Tripoli

The symbols of Colonel Gaddafi's rule are crumbling. But while his inner sanctum is now in rebel hands, Libya's longtime leader remains at large.

Gaddafi's opponents have now made their mark on the famous statue he erected at the Bab al-Aziziya compound after a US air strike in 1986. It was there that the fugitive strongman showed his defiance in the early days of the uprising. Still taunting his enemies, this time in his latest audio message, Gaddafi urged Libyans to march on Tripoli and defeat the rebels.

In Abu Selim, not far from his captured compound, there were fierce exchanges of gunfire. One report said rebel fighters were confident they had surrounded him in the area, but it proved to be unfounded, and he proved to be equally elusive.

However rebels did take scores of pro-Gaddafi fighters prisoner. They stormed the Abu Salim district after NATO air strikes in the area. And, in a sign the rebel authority is gradually taking over the levers of power from Gaddafi, it said it had begun moving its base from Benghazi to Tripoli.
