French Socialists closer to control of parliament

Initial results in France's first round of voting in the parliamentary elections gave Socialist Party supporters something to shout about.

Projections suggested the new socialist president François Hollande can look forward to a majority in the National Assembly.

After ejecting a conservative president last month, France now looks set to overturn the lower house of parliament. Early analysis suggested a left-wing bloc will hold sway giving the socialists more impetus to push through their economic and social reforms.

The head of the party, Martine Aubry, said the results were encouraging, opening the way for the president to have a majority voice next Sunday. "But it's not done yet and they have to ‘convert the try' on June 17," she said, calling for a big turnout.

If confirmed in Sunday's second round vote it will mean a left-wing Assembly in France for the first time in a decade.
