Flooding in Eastern Slovenia Claimed at least One Victim

The news was reported by the national auto club AMZS, as the victims were AMZS technicians who were on duty in the early hours of Saturday.

It was confirmed by the Celje police, which said a van had been found in Bolska stream around 11 AM. The victim, a woman, was found caught in the branches downstream two hours later.

The search for the second person continues, the police said.

Flooding has hit large swathes of eastern and south-central Slovenia, in particular the watersheds of the Krka and the Sava, as well as smaller rivers further to the east.

Reports suggest hundreds of buildings have been flooded, in particular in Dolenjsko region, along the Krka.

Flooding and landslides have closed dozens of road connections, mainly local roads.

The waters have started to subside as rain petered out towards midday.

The scale of the destruction will probably become clear in the coming days.
