First female Davis Cup captain in Spain sparks debate

The appointment of Spain's first female Davis Cup captain earlier this week has been met with criticism by several former and current players and coaches.

Gala Leon takes over from former world number one ranked Carlos Moyá at a low point for Spanish tennis. Moyá resigned after Spain lost to Brazil earlier this month and were relegated from the top group of teams for the first time since 1995.

León said she had no intention of creating a "sexist debate".

Rafa Nadal's coach Toni Nadal said it would be impractical to have a woman coach as she would not be able to enter the dressing room at all times.

He added that more suited coaches were available like former players Juan Carlos Ferrero, Sergi Bruguera and Alberto Berasategui.
