Egypt’s interim president sets timetable for elections and calls for calm

After Monday's bloody clashes in which at least 51 people died, Egypt's interim president has set a timetable for elections and called for calm.

Over night thousands of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Mursi gathered in Cairo, once again demanding his reinstatement.

The Muslim Brotherhood has accused the army of carrying out a massacre and have planned more protests for today. .

Muslim brotherhood spokesman, Gehad el-Haddad said:
"The army's press conference is nothing more than fiction and lies. Anyone who participated in revolutionary groups or movements on the ground in Egypt will quickly recognise the videos, as videos from Abbassis incidents, a year and a half ago when the army clashed with a number of political revolutionary groups on the ground."

Egypt's military issued video said to show individuals shooting at troops prompting them to open fire in self defence. The Muslim Brotherhood claimed it was an unprovoked attack by the army on legitimate protesters.

One thing is certain, the bloodshed has shocked Egyptians, sparking fears that the country is on the brink of spiralling into widespread civil unrest or something even worse.
